Where all the cool wheelchair people hang out
Home › Forum › General Chit-Chat › General Discussion › Racing wheelchairs for Cambodia
I have just spent about 5 months working on disability awareness and employment in Cambodia for Australian Business Volunteers.
Cambodia is a tough place for disabled persons- rough terrain, no government pensions etc. Generally disabled persons occupy the lowest standing in society (particularly disabled females).
There is an organisation which has encouraged wheelchair racing as well as disabled (standing) volleyball (the disabled volleyball league is also seeking sponsorship).
I have been lucky enough to meet a number of the racers. It is amazing the change in personality of some these people- they now have something to be proud of.
Most of the people either use standard street wheelchairs or locally (heavy) racing chairs. Whilst not of high quality, they race using similar equipment, which is ok for local competitions.
However, several of the men have the ability to race at international level, but only a couple of them have “proper” Australian made racing chairs. UPDATE
I obtained 2 chairs and took them to Cambodia in April 2011.
Big smiles by athletes – now 2 males are competing on equal “footing”. One chair went to the best female athlete (and coach).
Still more required.
I am hoping there are some distance racing wheelchairs sitting in some sheds or garages that are no longer used by their owners.
If so, they would be appreciated in Cambodia.
I am not in a position to offer to pay much for the chairs. You will get a letter of appreciation, and pictures and updates of how your chair is faring if you wish.
I will arrange pick-up and transport them to Cambodia.
